Here's a few links for fun in and around the DC area.

For all you Argentine Tango, Lindy, Swing, and Ballroom Dance lovers, here are a few spots I like in the area. I try and go out maybe once a week to an event, and I highly recommend them to you.

Swing Lessons Offered: Jitterbug, Charleston, Lindy-Hop, Argentine Tango, and More!

If you are looking to jump on the swing bandwagon, you are in for a lot of fun. Perhaps you are wondering where to get your feet wet, or maybe even start serious lessons! Well, here are my suggestions:

Ellen Engle and Marc Shepanek offer lessons at great prices and hold open dances Mondays at Glen Echo. There are a lot of instructors out there, but these are the best! Check them out at the Flying Feet Enterprises website.

Now if you are really enthused you can probably find some dance somewhere everyday of the week, but I suggest you try and keep this all in perspective. Life is too short and there are a lot of amazing things in this world besides dancing. Now I'll step off my soapbox, but meanwhile check out some of the events below that I pop into now and again...

Monday Night Swing

Glen Echo offers an open dance with instructor assistance in the Spanish Ballroom. check out Glen Echo's Spanish Ballroom for directions and Mark and Ellens Page for lesson times. The dance is from 9pm-Midnight, but from 8-9 their is a complimentary swing/jitterbug lesson to get you started. The cost for all this is only $5 and sometimes offers a live big band as well as one on one instruction.

Tuesday Night at Clarendon Ballroom

I wish I had the information handy, but it is a great venue to kick your heels up. I try to get there but often this damn work thing gets in the way.

Wednesdays with Carla Heiney, or at K2!

Carla Heiney offers great clases and you have some practice time afterwards if you like over in Bethesda.

Friday Night Argentine Tango

Stonehouse offers tango lessons the second and last weeks of every month at Stonehouse at Rock Creek Park. The cost is free, but the ask for a $5 contribution to a womens battered shelter. Class is taught by Joe Petrisko, and more information can be found here.

Saturday Argentine Tango at Glen Echo

Joe Petrisko hosts an Argentine Tango class in Glen Echo's Spanish Ballroom Saturdays from 3-5pm. These progressive classes are wonderful!

I've been a patron of both the Kennedy Center and Shakespeare Theatre for several seasons now, and I recommend both. Wolftrap has never dissapointed me, especially the summer lawn concerts, a great place to take a date! If you get a chance, drop by the Kennedy Centre and listen to one of their NSO concerts. I used to like the Folger a lot, with modern interpretations of Shakespeare's works, but of late the performances have been lacking the feeling that many of them used to. Of course they balance that with a hefty helping of nudity, which is always a good way to distract me from the littler details such as a storyline...

Oh, for those of you who like Beethoven, the NSO is having another Beethoven Festival this fall... subscription tickets are now available!

For hands on arts, like dance, music, or glassblowing lessons, check out Glen Echo at my "Fun in DC" page. There you can also find details on other cool places such as the Torpedo Factory in Old Town, Alexandria, or the Smithsonian Museums, which if you haven't been, is one place every turist must and usually does visit.

Personally, my favorite art museum is the Musee D'orsay in Paris, France. If you are ever there, go check it out. Also, Before you go to Paris, talk to your travel agent for a Paris Express Card. It costs around $30 for a week and gives you free metro and bus transit. It also gives you free entry into many of the museums in Paris with a seperate entrance. Trust me here, I bypassed a 4 hour wait at the Louvre and walked right in for free with this card!

As far as movies go, there are several great theatres in this area. Any blockbuster movie should be viewed at the Uptown in DC for proper dramatic effect. It sports a big screen and a balcony for seating it is that big. Nothing beats the classics though for me. Personally, I like "An American in Paris", "Breakfast at Tiffanys", "Dr. Zhivago", and "Kellys Heroes." Foreign films are also great... my favorite being "Himmel uber Berlin", "Zentropa", "Memento", "With a Friend Like Harry". If you are new to foreign films, avoid the movie about the secret of the ruby glass (German w/subtitles). It is the worst movie with only Highlander 2 and Mortal Kombat Annihilation marginally beating it. Check out MediaTrip.com for lots of cool web shorts!

Camping in Maryland - by far the best outdoors excursion you can take is a trip to Swallow Falls in Western Maryland. There are several fairly large waterfalls that you can play under and walk behind. Also, it's far enough outside of civilization that astronomy is awesome there! In Virginia I'd have to say Shennandoah Valley, anywhere along the AT! I wouldn't recommend any place where you can't bring a dog, but be careful along the AT... I really recommend using a leash with your pooch, otherwise they just might bring a bear back with them when you are not looking.

For Maryland, a great resource on national and state parks is DNR. If you have a great puppy like me, you may wonder where you can take pets to camp in MD! Well, here is your Maryland pets resource.

Hiking in the Maryland/Virginia area. Outside of the usual routine in DC, take a stroll over to Great Falls. The Billy Goat Trail always offers a challenging day hike/climb. When you are done, take a shot over to the Virginia side, which offers many interesting trails. Information on all of of Great Falls and the C&O canal can be found at their web site. Also, Rock Climbing is great on both the Virginia and Maryland side. If you climb there, or are interested in learning to climb, drop me a line!

Canoeing and Kayaking is pretty great in this area. I recommend hooking up with an outfitter. If this area is not challenging enough, head up past Swallow Falls area and take a shot at the Youghiogheny River.

Here is a pretty good outfitter at OuterQuest!

If instead you prefer to rollerblade, one park I really like is Lake Artemisia in Maryland (in College Park actually.) It's beautiful, and has lots of gentle climbs so beginners can get comfortable there too! Alexandria can be a lot of fun too!
